Removing The Green Slime From Pools And Clearing Water For A Big Opening Party

Adrian Spencer

The pool water that has been left in your pool since last year is probably starting to change colors. As the algae and organisms bloom in the water, it will become a slime-like green or even dark brown color. Removing the debris and clearing the water up may seem like a huge task, but it is not too difficult if you know what to do. Here are some tips to help get the slime out of the water and make it crystal clear before a big pool opening party:

1. Getting Dirty and Fishing Out All the Large Debris with Manual Tools

The first thing you will have to do to get the slime out of your pool is get dirty. You will want to gather manual tools, such as nets, extension pole and broom to start scooping the debris out of the pool. First, remove all the large debris you can with the net. Start sweeping debris on the bottom of the pool to the shallow area. Sweep everything into a pile to make it easy to scoop out with the net. Keep repeating this process until you start to see the water get a little cleaner. Go around and remove debris from equipment and skimmer baskets as well.

2. Adding an Anti-Algae Treatment to Begin the Process of Clearing Water

Once large debris has been removed, add an anti-algae treatment to the water. Give the treatment time to work before cleaning the pool again. As the blooms die, they will sink to the bottom where you can use a broom or pool vacuum to remove them. Try to remove as much material as possible before you start your pool filtration system.

3. Shocking, Clearing and Circulating the Water to Get It Clean in Time for Opening

Once you have most the debris out of the water, you will be ready to start filtering the water. Apply the shock treatment to the water and start the pool pump. To reduce problems with debris clogging filters, put small filters in skimmers to collect any floating debris. Use above ground pool filters to put in the skimmers and clean them with a garden hose. Clean the main filter when the water looks clean. If the water is still a little cloudy, apply a treatment to clear up the water for opening day.

Getting the slime out of your pool and treating the water will take patience and a little elbow grease. Contact a pool repair contractor, like those at Anchor Pools & Spas or a similar location, to help with repairs to equipment and other maintenance tasks that need to be done before opening day.
