Three Reasons Why You Need A Pool Contractor For An In-Ground Pool

Adrian Spencer

Putting in an in-ground pool is a lot of work. It is not so cut and dry as you might think. Before you attempt to do such a massive project on your own, take a look at why you need a pool contractor for this project first.

Excavation Has to Be Perfectly Shaped

An in-ground pool often has varying depth levels. It starts out shallow on one end and ends up deep on the other. To achieve this, a pool contractor and his/her crew have to dig very specific depths down into the ground and excavate the dirt into a perfectly shaped area. The man-made levels in the ground have to be leveled off with intense precision. If just one small section is off by an inch or more, the entire pool installation will be lopsided. A lopsided pool installation will result in future repairs costing hundreds, even thousands of dollars.

Creating Vertical Walls of Cement Takes Major Skill

If you are planning on creating a cement base underneath a fiberglass drop-in pool, or you just want a complete cement-walled pool, that takes some serious skill. Even if your pool's walls are straight up and down and not bowl-shaped, the cement walls have to be constructed using special vertical wall forms so that the walls are uniform in thickness and height. Not even the most advanced DIY homeowner knows how to do this, and it takes a pool contractor and several crew members just to erect the wall forms before pouring the cement. Once the cement is in the wall forms, the pool project is on hold until the cement hardens enough to pull the wall forms away and smooth them out.

Drop-in Pool Forms Do Not Just "Drop In"

While it is true that fiberglass drop-in pools are somewhat easier to install, the fact remains that they do not simply "drop in." You have to have something in the excavated hole in the ground to which the pool drop-in can adhere. With nothing to adhere to, this type of pool shifts and slides every time it rains and can crack as the weight of the water wiggles it this way and that. Most pool contractors use a thin layer of cement underneath the bottom surfaces of the pool as the "glue" to get the drop-in pool to stay in place. Once dried, the openings along the sides of the pool may be carefully filled in with cement as well. There is no way you can manage this on your own.
