3 Primary Problems With Older Swimming Pools Every Homeowner Should Know About

Adrian Spencer

Whether you bought your home with a pool already on the property or you had the in-ground pool installed several years back, you probably already know that owning a pool means ongoing maintenance for the long haul. However, even with proper maintenance and attention, occasionally an in-ground pool can give you unexpected problems. This is especially true if the pool has been in place for several years. If your old swimming pool is giving you hassles, contact a pool renovation expert for advice. In the meantime, check out these common issues with older in-ground pools you should know about as a homeowner.

Problem: The concrete encasement of the pool is shifting or cracking.

Cause and Solution: In most cases, if the concrete encasement that creates the pool in the ground moves or shifts, it is relative to a shift or change in the ground beneath it. This ground shifting can be a natural change over time, but it can also be caused by changes in groundwater levels. Believe it or not, if the pool is damaged to an extensive amount, sections of the pool can drift substantially. If these changes do occur, a pool renovation contractor will have to assess the changes and determine if the pool should be moved to a new location.

Problem: The pool is losing water even though there are no visible signs of damage.

Cause and Solution: Water loss can be caused by all kinds of issues, but with older pools, there is usually a common culprit. If your pool has an outdated liner, it should be replaced. However, not all old pools have a liner, but rather a sealed encasement. Unfortunately, the materials used in these polls tend to become porous with age, which can mean water will seep out. If this is the situation, a renovation contractor may be able to resurface the pool or you may be able to get a custom-made liner to prevent the issues.

Problem: The water of your pool appears dirty or cloudy even though the filtration system seems to be working.

Cause and Solution: If the lines to the pool pump are underground, this kind of problem can point to damaged water pump filtration lines. If the lines are damaged, it can prevent the pump from pulling and pumping water as it should, but soil can also slip into the outgoing lines and get pushed into the pool consistently.

If you're seeing one of the above issues with your pool, reach out to a renovation contractor like After Hours Pool Service.
