3 Signs It's Time For A Pool Remodel

Adrian Spencer

No matter if you had a pool installed years ago or moved into a home with one existing, a pool will require maintenance and updates over time. To ensure it increases the value of your home in the right conditions, ongoing maintenance, repairs, water treatments, and remodels may be necessary. Of course, the right updates will improve the appeal and function of your pool while making your home more valuable. If you are experiencing one or the following, it is time to update your pool.

Visible Damage

Over time, small cracks and fissures may develop in the concrete around your pool. In addition, tile may become loose or break off. This type of damage is noticeable in most cases, but it can also lead to expensive problems in the future.

When left unrepaired, cracks in the concrete can spread, causing further damage to the pool surround. Moisture can seep into these cracks, freezing over time and causing the cracks to widen. In these situations, you may need to resurface the entire area surrounding your pool with new concrete.

Loose tiles are not only unattractive, but they can also become dangerous. You, your children, guests, and pets may trip over the loose tiles, resulting in an injury.

If you are noticing multiple cracks or loose tiles, it is important to have the pool inspected by a contractor since this damage may be caused by an underlying water leak. Even the smallest leaks can lead to a great deal of water waste, but the leaks can also be costly to repair.

Unappealing Water

If you have not tested or treated your water as recommended, you may notice a great deal of debris and discoloration on the water's surface. Most debris can be cleaned out using a pool net. However, restoring water that is ridden with algae back to a healthy and refreshing state will require a bit more effort.

Different types of algae may form inside your pool without proper cleaning and filtration. Green is the most common form of algae that develops in the pool water, occasionally building up on the interior walls. This algae can make your entire pool appear green in color.

Yellow and black algae are also a problem you may find if your pool is exposed to more shade than sunlight. Both yellow and black algae are difficult to remove.

To kill the algae and make your pool cleaner and healthier, you will need to first to remove all leaves, pine straw, mulch, and other debris floating in the water. Then, test the pH levels of the pool with a water testing kit.

Safe, healthy pH levels will range from 7 to 7.6. Adding chlorine to the pool will adjust the pH levels. Be sure to recheck the levels after adding the pool chemicals.

After chlorinating the water, you will need to shock your pool to kill the algae. Purchase an algaecide from your local supply center and spread the product into the water while walking around the perimeter of your pool. Once the algaecide is applied, make sure the pool's filtration system is on and running to continue clearing out the debris and algae.

It's Boring

A standard rectangular-shaped pool sitting out in your backyard may be functional, but it does not offer much in terms of style and personality. A boring, ordinary pool will not be appealing or valuable, so consider investing in a few fun, attractive updates and customizing your pool through a place like DESJOYAUX POOLS.

Today, more and more contractors are adding elegant waterfalls that are built right into the pool's side. The sound of flowing water is not only visibly appealing, but it also relaxing to listen to.

Professional lighting in and around your pool will also be a great addition. This lighting allows you to enjoy the pool at night with your family or while entertaining guests.

Last, but not least, opt for a fire feature of sorts. A fireplace, which can be built into the pool design or in the area surrounding your pool, adds elegance while keeping you and your guests warm.

A swimming pool is a big investment, so you may not feel the need to complete repairs or updates.
