What To Consider When Buying A Hot Tub

Adrian Spencer

Do you want to get a hot tub for your backyard, but not sure what to look for? Here are some things to consider when buying a hot tub

The Filtration System

You are going to hear a lot of buzzwords when it comes to the filter system within a hot tub. However, all of those do not really mean that much in the long run. What you want to pay attention to is how many gallons per minute the filter is able to process. This is the amount of water that passes through the filter every single minute, with more gallons being processed resulting in cleaner water. In addition, the size of the filter does not mean a lot either if you do not plan to clean it regularly. A filter that is physically big is going to perform just as well as a small filter.

The Jet Pumps

The hot tub's jet pumps are going to be either one of two sizes, either a 46 frame or a 56 frame motor. The name of the motor primarily describes the size, with the 56 frame motor being physically bigger in size. What kind of pump do you want? Go with the 56 frame motor when possible. The larger motor is going to run cooler overall due to its bigger size, which will help the motor last longer before it needs repair or replacement.

The Jets

One defining feature that makes the jets different from each other is how the jets attach to the hot tub. There was a shift in how jets were manufactured, with the older style jets clipping onto the hot tub and the newer style being threaded where they screw on. It will be to your benefit to purchase a newer style where the jets screw onto the hot tub. This is because it will be easier to find replacement parts for the threaded style jet if you need them down the road.

The Exterior Construction Material

The construction material of the hot tub matters, since it is what is exposed to the sun, rain, wind, and other outdoor elements. An exterior made out of plastic is going to survive many years without being damaged due to how strong it is. Meanwhile, synthetic material looks nice at first but is quite hard and brittle. The material can fade under the sun, and easily crack under various weather conditions.
